Overview & Highlights

Welcome to Yung Chen Craighall Park, a delightful Cantonese restaurant located conveniently at Shop No. 18, Shepherd Market, 339 Jan Smuts Ave, Craighall, Randburg, South Africa. If you're on the hunt for hearty, flavorsome dishes in a laid-back setting, Yung Chen promises just that.

This hidden gem specializes in traditional Cantonese cuisine, ideal for those seeking the authentic taste of China without leaving Gauteng. Influenced by the vibrant flavors that the region is known for, their menu showcases a variety of appetizers, main courses, and delightful desserts that combine both texture and taste.

Start your culinary journey with their crispy appetisers, such as the golden-fried prawns, or indulge in their renowned spring rolls - crispy on the outside and packed with fresh flavors. One of the standout items that customers rave about is the wuntun soup, described by longtime patron Graham Johnson as the best in Johannesburg. For main dishes, you can’t miss the beef oyster sauce or the black pepper beef, both offering a perfect balance of savory richness and spice that will leave your taste buds dancing.

Don’t forget to try the flavorful Yung Chen noodles, which you can elevate with a dash of extra chili for those who like a bit of heat. The portion sizes here are generous, ensuring that you get great value for your money, something that’s highlighted by regulars like Leon Uys, who appreciates the consistency and quality, especially after a long day.

The atmosphere, while primarily functional and no-frills, serves its purpose of delivering delicious food quickly. It may not be a luxury dining experience, but that is part of its charm—a spot where you can grab a hearty meal after a busy day without breaking the bank. Though parking can sometimes be a hassle, the swift service makes it a worthwhile stop-off.

Overall, whether you are looking to indulge in takeout or want a quick bite, Yung Chen Craighall Park has something for everyone. Its cozy yet functional setup combined with flavorful offerings makes it a beloved spot for casual dining. Come as you are, and prepare for a satisfying meal that harkens back to the heart of Cantonese flavors.

Food was ok, but nothing really to write home about. There were hardly any vegetables in the chow mein, the prawns were dry and everything was a little bland. Service was quick, but the table where you can sit and eat was only there for functionality.

This is my go-to for street-food when I'm lazy to cook in the evenings, and it tastes better than my own cooking. Consistency also helps, I've never had a problem with the quality. A fair price and large portions also helps. Personal favourites are crispy beef and cashew chicken. Oh, and a starter of fried prawns. Good place to pop in to.

Quick service and good was delicious. Probably the most flavourful spring rolls and dumplings I've had in Jhb. Highly recommended

May not have the best sit down atmosphere and parking is difficult at times but the Yung Chen noodles with some extra chilli is amazing!

Best wuntun soup in Johannesburg. 22 April 2022 update. So I have been getting Chinese Takeout from Yung Chen for so many years at least 2 or three times a month and the quality and consistency of the food has never changed. It is excellent and great value for money. We treated ourselves to a selection of chicken corn soup, egg fried rice, plain noodles, beef oyster sauce, black pepper beef and beef chop suey. Each meal as good as the next.. Just live these guys.
